sir,

DOWNING STREET, LONDON.
13th February 1895.
With reference to your letter of the 22nd October last authorising us to pay Mr Robert Clare a pension of $120 per annum from the Government of Hong Kong, I have the
honour to state that it appears from a pension form which
has just been presented to us that he holds the Office of
Chief Engineer, Calcutta Fire Brigade under the Government
of India, and that the emoluments of that office amount to
Rs 220 per mensem. Mr Clare's late full salary in Hong Kong he gives on the form as £100 per annum.
On enquiry at the India Office, it appears however that Mr Clare's appointment is under the municipality of
Calcutta and not under the Government of India. In these
circumstances we propose, with the Secretary of State's ap-
proval, to pay the Hong Kong pension in full.
I have the honour to be,
The Under Secretary of State.
