That this fall in the value of silver as compared
with the value of gold has greatly increased the cost
of living in Hongkong.

That dress materials, shirts, collars, the materials
for shoes, soaps, hats, socks, tinned goods of all
descriptions and other articles too many to enumerate
here, are all produced in England and in other gold
using countries; and that the prices of such articles
on account of the rise in the value of gold as compared
with the value of silver, have greatly gone up.
IO. That such articles are necessary to those whose

habits and manner of living are European.
That those whose habits and manner of living are
not European do not consume such articles; and that
they therefore are not affected by the fall in exchange

That your petitioner's habits and manner of living
are European in all respects; that he therefore con-
-sumes such articles; and that he therefore is affect-
-ed by the fall in exchange.

That your petitioner has relations living in France;
