The Humble Petition of the undersigned East

Indian Clerks and Interpreters in the Civil

Service of the Colony of Hongkong

Humbly sheweth,

That Your Petitioners are Clerks and Interpreters

in the various Departments of the Civil Service of the

Colony of Hongkong and are domiciled in various parts of

British East India.

2.

That since 1893, owing to the great fall in

Exchange on India, Your Petitioners have suffered and

are still suffering pecuniarily in making remittances

to their relations and in purchasing locally or importing

stores from India.

3.

That Your Petitioners have likewise suffered and

are still suffering pecuniarily owing to the great rise

in the price of articles of food purchased locally and

in the great rise in house rents consequent upon the

great and continued fall in the value of the dollar.
