My dear Marques,
You are quite right.
Ayres is quite wrong
when he says you were distinctly informed that the F.M. work
formed no part of your duties. If Ayres will read the Col.
Secy.'s letter he will see his mistake. Ayres is also wrong
in saying that inthis case you are taking a great responsibility
on yourself without any authority for so doing. When you do
anything at my request you have no responsibility whatever: I
alone am responsible for the official work which I ask you to
do, and your answer to Ayres is all that is necessary to clear
you.
Sir,
Friday.

May 3rd 1888.
I have the honour to lay before you the request
of the patients in the Lock Hospital that they may be served
with meat daily instead of only twice a week.
I propose to give them meat at dinner, and the
following scale of diet which is the old one slightly altered,
will be supplied by the Compradore, for the same price as be-
fore; 11 cents per head.
