"assistance in carrying on the Hospital duties, and Dr. Marques was

"good enough to share work with them.”

In page 4, Appendix A, paragraphs 1 and 3, Dr. Ayres declares that the Europeans (by this term I assume he means English-

men only) do not like to bave anything to do with me, and that in

consequence, it caused a great deal of trouble in the Hospital. In

answer to this, I have only to state that I have attended great many

Europeans of every nationality including many Englishmen in the ser- vice, both at the Civil and in the Small-Pox Hospital. They have

expressed entire satisfaction with my treatment. Some of these

patients are still in the Colony, and if required, I shall have much

pleasure in calling upon them to bear testimony on my behalf. There

may possibly be some of then, though I am not aware of any, who may

object to me, simply because I am a Portuguese, but considering that

I am qualified as a medical man in the United Kingdom, it should not

the reception of Europeans? I had been then more than six years in

the service.

pital and I was confined to my house for a few days, about a week, with Influenza. I am of strong constitution, have always enjoyed

good health, and have not been for one day on sick list, except on

these two occasions.

10. In paragraph 4, page 682, Appendix A, Dr. Atkinson gave as

bis opinion, that from his personal experience of me, he does not

consider me competent to take up the work at the Civil. Hospital.

Of course, I do not know on what facts Dr". Atkinson formed his opini
