GOVERNMENT LUNATIC ASYLUMS,

HONGKONG,

INSTRUCTIONS TO WARDMASTERS.

February, 1894.

:

1. The Wardinasters are responsible to the Superintendent for the reception and due care of the inmates over which they have control.

2. The Wardmaster, when admitting a patient, shall request him to hand over any valuables in his possession to the Steward for safe keeping. Should the patient be insensible when admitted, the Wardmaster shall take possession of any valuables, &c., and hand them over as soon as possible to the Steward.

3. The Wardmasters shall supervise the care and nursing of the male inmates, administering medicines, taking temperatures and maintaining order and cleanliness in the wards, lavatories and latrines.

4. They shall do day and night duty on alternate weeks the hours being from 6 o'clock A.M. to 6 o'clock P.M., and from 6 o'clock r.m. to 6 o'clock a.m.

5. The Senior Wardınaster shall be responsible for the equipment and the bedding and clothing for the wards.

6. The Wardmasters shall have the immediate control of the Chinese attendants in their wards reporting to the Superintendent any defect of duty.

7. The Senior Wardmaster shall every Saturday morning make out a duty list of the Chinese attendants and submit the same to the Superintendent.

8. The Wardmaster on day duty shall visit his wards at each meal time and ascertain if the patients get what has been ordered for them by the Medical Officer.

9. The Wardmaster on day duty shall enter in a book provided for the purpose any orders the

Doctor has left concerning treatment, &c., of the patients during the succeeding night.

10. If the Wardmaster find it necessary to apply a straight jacket to an inmate he must imme- diately report the same in writing to the Medical Officer on duty, and enter the particulars in a book provided for the purpose.

11. The Wardmaster on duty shall not leave the premises under any pretext whatever, if he find it necessary to summon the Doctor he must do so in writing.

12. No one shall be allowed to visit any inmate without the permission in writing of one of the Medical Officers.

13. No Officer shall absent himself from the Asylum premises except subject to such regulations as the Medical Officer may from time to time issue.

14. The Wardmaster on duty shall enter in a book provided for the purpose the times at which the different Officers and attendants leave and return to the Asylum, likewise noting the names of any visitors, and the time they arrive and leave.

15. On the death of a patient, the fact shall be immediately noted on the bed card which shall be sent as soon as possible to the Steward who shall make arrangements for the removal of the body to the Mortuary. In the absence of the Steward the Wardmaster himself shall see that this is carried out.
