To the Hon: Colonial Secretary.
Sir,
I am in receipt of your communication No. 526, dated
he chuching he copy of the Evidence taken
19th inst:(in regard to the alleged assault on a Chinese female
A
lunatic in the Asylum on the 5th instant.
In reply to charge.
(1) I distinctly deny being under the influence of drink, (if
that means being drunk.) I was quite fit for, and did my duty in the
usual way from 6 p. m. on the 5th till 6a. . on the 6th instant.
(2) I did go into the female ward which I have been in the hatit
of doing weekly for the last 3 years or more. I usually take the
amah with me on those occasions, but as she was engaged with a
patient in the European Asylum, I went in tv myself and visited the
bath room and closet as usual. On my way put the female lunatic
referred to caught hold of me, in an affectionate way as she does
with most people who happen to have business in the ward. I led her
quietly to her room and came out. I was instructed by Dr. Atkinson
out
three years ago that it was not necessary to visit the female
patients, but that referred more particularly to the European Asylum
Previous to that time it was quite a common thing for the Wardmaster
to go the female wards to issue medicine &c.
(3) I most emphatically deny having assaulted a patient as stated.
