RESP Rec 27 MAY 96)
Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce,
Hong Kong 25ra. April 1895.
The Chamber recently learned with much satis-
faction that Her Majesty's advisers, doubtlessly acting
on the suggestion of the Mercantile Communities of Hong
Kong and the Straits Settlements, had recommend the minting
of a British Dollar which will shortly become a legal ten-
der in both places. In connection with this subject the
Committee request you will bring to the notice of His Excel-
lency the Governor, who from the first interested himself
in the suggested coinage, and who was good enough when cor-
responding with the Home Authorities to advocate its matp
adoption, the following resolution put forward by Mr. T.
Jackson, seconded by Mr. G. Sharp, and unanimously adopted
Ja general meeting of the members of the Chamber hela
the 19th. instant.

this Colony upon a satisfactory footing; that as a
first step every means should be adopted to protect
the new co ins from the foolish practice of chopping
and defacing dollars, and that the Government be requeЛ.
