disconneching hap in Pottinger Street.

I understand that after this the outfall to Pottinger Street was closed in the manhole at Nr. 30 Praya Central.

In December last these obrains were overflowing through the fresh air inlet opposite. Ne 30 Praya Coentral, the disconnecting trap at this place breing broken.

6" of the drains on the instant and found them working but dirty; the broken Arap had been crueword. On this occasion I passed an 8mm round vion scraper through the short portion of drain between N. 30. Paya and the disconnecting trap in Pottinger Street and removed ore and a half bucketsofdeposit containing 3 picces of blue brick an old fin and other solids which could hardly pass into the drains through the legitimat passage of a le trap and grating,

I also passed the scraper oute. through the whole length from the manhole in No 31 to that in No 1 Pottinger Street and removed a half bucket of deposit.

At the same time Isra mined all the traps; they were sound and for the most part clean into houses they dirty and in one. No 27 Bettinger Street_ the trap was choked.

AORKES

From deservations made in the present case and from previous experience. I have no hesitation in saying that the stoppage in the drains is due tochoking at the disconnecting traps and this would also account in a measure for their taty condition. The frequent choking of the drains appears to be the result of the removal of the manhole covers and the introduction of solids which the drains were never intended to recein and it is during the removal of th from the trap that it gets broken. I am of opinion that it would be wise to remor these carrsaud fix stones with mortar joints in their place; these stomss could be removed when necessary for examining and cleaning the drains and it is not likely that they would be raised by the kuants as I know the manholes

these solids

The drains and traps should be examined at regular intervals of syonce a week for the traps and once in le months for the drains; the disconnecting haps should receive special attention as ifchoked a stoppage takes place in the whole system.

8. There is no 'new drainage system to these houses in the sense implied in Mr Stephens' latter, the new drains have been laid in the sume lines as the old, the difference being that all reasonable precautions have now been taken
