Report on the re-drainage of Houses situation Marine Loh No.1/

1. Con the 144 of June 1892 a complaint was lodged respecting the bad state of drainag at 21 and 23 Pottinger Street, it being asserted that the sewage was appearing in the buck yards of these houses.

2. In consequence of this complaint and on its bring found that the drains to those houses formed part of a system which was common to all the houses on M.L. 14 a warrant was obtained for the inspection of the drains of the Lot, and the inspection took place. 28th June

3. The old drains consisted of an 18" main barrel drain passing down the center of the Lot which received the brauches 9" square from the down jupes and cook leaking and houses. These drains were all constructed of blue brick, they

in bad repair and contained considerable deposit.

The inlets to them were intrapped and the main drain connected direct to the public sauver so that the sewer air had direct access to the houses. 4. Con the 9th July a letter was written to Mr Stephens'. Agents requesting them to have the drains reconstructed in accordance with the law governing the reconstruction of defective house drains, and plans for this work wrredsposing July 28th. Under the new system q" stoneware pipes, jointed with coment, hair bren laid for the main drain with b junctions and traps to receive the sullage water from down pipes and cook houses. The outfall passes under. No 30 Praya Central and is connected to the main sewer in the haya, a trap with fresh air inlet being fixed to disconnect it from the main sewer. Three manholes fitted with vion covers have been built on the main drain at junctions and bends, a of the roof at the summit ventilating pipe has been carried up above the races of the drain and the whole system has been designed and carried out in accordance with the best known sanitary principles. The work was completed October 19 " 1892. 5. In January 1893, W. Stephens called on me and stated that the drains were choked and that he would like to construct another outfall into Settinger Sreet and this work was completed in February

He called again in April and on this occasion I visited the houses with of the stoppage to be the him and Mr. McCallum and ascertained the cause
