Infirmary.

RULE 7.-The director will set apart a room or rooms in the Reformatory for an infirmary for the sick and shall provide medicines and suitable diet for them, subject to any direction given in each case by any Government medical officer.

Discipline and Punishment.

RULE 8.--No punishment shall be inflicted except by the director or assistant director, or under their supervision and by their order. The punishment shall be:-standing in a fixed position for a limited time but for not more than 6 hours in any one day and for not more than 2 hours at any one time, confinement in a solitary cell, reduction of food, extra fatigue duties, and in extreme cases corporal DRAFT. punishments.

There shall be no reduction of food for more than 48 hours at any one time, nor shall this punishment be inflicted on any boy more than once a week, nor shull the quantity of food be reduced below that specified as Punishment Diet in Rule 6.

Corporal punishment shall be adininistered with a cane on the hand and shall not exceed 10

strokes.

A solitary cell shall not be a dark cell, and the inmate shall be visited by the director, assistant

light. No sentence shall be for a longer period than 48 hours.

Bodily Restraint.

RULE 9-In extreme cases, when a boy is riotous or disorderly and cannot in any other way be restrained from doing mischief to himself or others, or from destroying property, he may be contined in band-cuffs of approved pattern, but no such confinement shall be for a longer period than 24 hours without the order in writing of a Justice of the Peace or Magistrate.

Hours of Labour.

RULE 10.--Every boy shall receive instruction in some trade or handicraft. Hours of labour shall not exceed 6 in any one day and shall be divided into periods of not more than two hours, ench with an interval of not less than half an hour between each period. Not less than three hours in each day shall be devoted to work in school where the boys shall be taught to read and write in Chinese, and such other useful information shall be imparted as the director shall think suitable and convenient.

Dress.

RULE 11-The boys shall, as a rule, wear no shoes or head-covering, and shall he clothed in Chinese dress of such pattern and quality as the director shall prescribe. The director shall be at liberty to permit the wearing of suitable head-covering as a protection from the sun in summer and from the cold in winter, when the boys are at work or play in the open air, in any case in which it may seem desirable.
