With reference to my despatch No.142 of

the 22nd of June, I have the honour to enclose

herewith to Your Lordship, a copy of a further des-

patch from Mr Brenan commenting upon certain state-

ments relative to his action at Canton, which were

reported to the Marquis of Ripon by His Excellency

the Governor of Hongkong in a despatch dated the

20th of June and published in the Hongkong Press.

I have received from the Governor of Hong-

kong the copies of correspondence between the Colo-

nial Secretary and Mr Prenan to which His Excellency,

in Paragraph 15 of his despatch to Lord Ripon, re-

fers, but as I had already made representations to the Tsungli Yamên at the instance of Her Majesty's

Consul at Canton and the action of the Canton Vice-

roy had been on the whole as satisfactory as could
