sometimes in 12 hours almost always within 36 hours of the attack. +
The only other district in this part of the world in which the plague is known to be endemic is the Port of Pakhoi in this Province Lat. 21° 30′ Long. 109°
- on the Gulf of Tonquin and in the neigh- bouring towns. These was a bad outbreak at Pakhoi in the spring of 1882 which has been described with professional skill by Dr J.H.Lowry and again this spring when the disease began about the middle of March.
It is a significant fact that there is a much frequented trade route from the above described region in Yunnan by way of the Canton West River through the towns of Po-se and Nan-ning to Pakhoi. We have no certain proof that the disease prevails along this route in Kwang-si but it is quite likely as we have very little knowledge of what goes on in that Province. The disease is said to have been known at Pakhoi for between 20 and 30 years.
On the other hand there are facts telling strongly against the theory of distant infection namely that Hoi-how the open port of the Island of Hai-nan which is in constant communication by steamer with Pakhoi has never been invaded by the plague. But this may be due to the moister climate
of the Island Port. And again Macao has escaped al-
