Before writing as proposed in above minutes
? Send Admiralty copy of M. Chadwick's printed Report of last year, & say that the Colony is taking out chance the proposed steps to be contained therein for increasing Water Supply, and that on learning this fact their Lordships may possibly think it unnecessary to proceed with additional reservoir for the use of the Naval Establishment.

I am commanded by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to state, for the information of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, that with a view to improving the Water Supply to the Army and Naval Establishments at Hong Kong, which for the past two years has been insufficient, in consequence of the prolonged drought, they propose to build an additional reservoir for the storage of water against the recurrence of very dry seasons such as have been of late experienced.
The gathering ground from which the Water will be collected and the proposed position of the accompanying reservoir are shown on the accompanying tracing, and I am to request that the Marquis of Ripon will be so good as to inform their Lordships whether the ground, which belongs to the Colonial Government, is said to be uninhabited & uncultivated, will be available for the purpose.
Under Secretary of State
L.P.--No. 8
for the Colonies Colonial Office
Jaw,
Your obedient servant Evan Macleod
