however that it is more usual to make the enquiry
of the
nationality of
a
vessel
by
flag signal, Commercial Code, rather than by firing blank)
the French ship of
war,
appears to have done in
this instance.

is advised that the "Fai quon",
having
no colours hoisted when
the "Forfait" fired the blank
gun,
has
no
ground for
complaint
as
a British ship;
she being, at the time, of a nationality unknown to the
French
