My allusion to the water-Supply had special reference to an interview I had the honour of having with H.E. The Governor (at his own request) on the 6th of June last, at which interview, I pointed out to His Excellency, how, in view of the probability of another water famine in the City, it was necessary, before the commencement of the approaching "dry season", to increase the water Supply to the City about 50 per cent. (and that at a very reasonable cost, viz. $250,000) provided the necessary works were put in hand at once. Unfortunately, there was nothing in my letter to induce Mr. Chadwick to make the statements he has, and in order to prevent wrong impressions being formed, either by the Government or others, I beg to inform you, that Messrs. Butterfield and Swire have no intention of selling water, either to the Government or to anyone else.
The suggestion of obtaining a temporary supply from their new reservoir, in case of an emergency, was my own, and had reference to the approaching dry season only, and as I distinctly stated in my letter, was subject to my clients' sanction being obtained.
I should be glad, therefore, if you would kindly bring the matter to the notice of H.E. The Governor, in order that the Report may be withdrawn, or the allusions to my "private" letter referred to be given up. There were, however, no instructions to that effect.
