the extent of several thousand
Dollars per annum
have been effected by its present
head. I trust Your Lordship will
see the propriety of fixing
The salary at a higher rate than that paid to the Superintendent
of the Gaol (including the value of their quarters)
as proposed for the Assistant Colonial Secretary.
At present Your Lordship will observe that the Colonial Treasurer who is
a member of both Councils is paid at a lower rate than the
Police Magistrate rising to $500 a year, i.e., $100
less than allotted to the Colonial Treasurer.
I believe that there would be no objection on
the part of the Legislative Council to this increase
and I am happy to say that since the unfortunate
case of Messrs Alver, the present Colonial Treasurer
has thoroughly rehabilitated himself in public estimation
and has proved himself to be a competent
and energetic Official.
A conciliated statement to this effect has
been made on several occasions by those
who were previously inclined to criticise
and it has been suggested that the Assistant Colonial Secretary should
