returned to the Colony, the decrease of the population on the 7th July having been estimated at 61,362 whereas on the 28th ultimo it was only 33,842; and it is earnestly hoped that the remedial measures and preventive adopted and to be adopted by the Government will be sufficiently effective to render a recrudescence in the plague next spring most improbable.

It will notwithstanding be the duty of the authorities to keep a constant and vigilant watch on all arrivals from the Southern Ports of China and to adopt very searching measures, especially in respect to arrivals from Canton and Pakhoi.

A Public meeting will be held shortly over which I have been asked and have consented to preside with a view of placing on record the
