With regard to the measuring of the cable, this would be somewhat difficult operation and appliances which are at present available would require to be obtained. There are difficulties in the way of ascertaining by periodical measurement whether a regular tension takes place. Assuming a variation in temperature of the cable to be from 40° to 120° Fahr., the extension which would occur from this alone would be 2 ft. & inches.
The engine affords the only drawing means at present for the cable slightly over ... that the best course to adopt would be to refer the whole.
The guide pulleys and whenever it is started the cable is raised off the guide pulleys underneath Bowen Road Bridge, so that some other method would have to be adopted for making the cable tight for measuring. I would also point out that owing to the changes of temperature there would be difficulties in the question of the tests for the opinion of the Board of Trade's experts at home, supplying them with the fullest possible information regarding the Tramway.
