8. I believe it is not customary to test boilers regularly in England. They are tested when new and generally inspected periodically afterwards.
9. Messrs Stumphreys & Son advance as a reason for abandoning the tests that the construction and method of working of cable Tramways in England are so essentially different from those of the Peak Tramway, in my opinion they admit of comparison between the two.
10. In the Cable Tramways in England, the cable is an endless rope running continuously in a horizontal direction and is kept in motion during the time when the cars are running. Each car is furnished with a "gripper" by means of which it is temporarily attached to the cable when desired. Every car is provided with brakes, its hold of the cable is released, and the brakes are brought into action. Assuring that the brakes failed to act on any occasion, the cable could again be seized by the gripper. The brakes must be maintained in proper working order.
11. In the Peak Tramway, the brakes on each car are provided for use only in case of the cable breaking and, so far as I am aware, they have never been brought into action except on trial.
