I have received from Your Lordship the following telegram. [Lee076. "Grit true that Hongkong infected with cases Bubonic plague also other ports in neighbourhood." to which I have replied: "Hongkong nearly 900 cases of Bubonic plague to date confined to lower classes of Chinese. Great mortality. Rainy season commenced after prolonged drought. Cases of sickness considerably diminishing. Canton and Pakhoi affected. Despatch follows by mail."]

The total number of new cases up to noon yesterday, (17th May) was 27 and the number of deaths was 20. Previously it was as high as 59 and the number was only 10.

The heavy and continuous fall of rain, probably some 8 or 10 inches within the last 3 days, has done an infinite amount of good.
