remain near an affected patient or corpse. The organization of two large hospitals in addition to Extra heavy work in the Government Civil Hospital has been rather a heavy task on the European few Chinese in the Medical Department, and for some time it was only by slaving night & day that we were enabled to carry on.

During the last few days the searching party have been hard at work under Captain Superintendent May & are now I think making good progress. We have been greatly assisted by the Blue Jacket's of the HMS Immanuel who have been placed at our disposal, and under their direction at the various wharves the patients or dead bodies are expeditiously transferred to the Hospitals or the Burying ground. We are at present erecting a shed for suspected cases..

All cases alive are sent off in the ambulance boat; all dead bodies are removed in another boat; whilst all old clothes are removed in a dinghy & burned at the Burying ground. This involves work every hour.
