... coolies. They lodged for the most part in ninety large coolie houses, seven of that number being occupied by Jung Koon about thirty, and the remainder by others.
450 were given for the "Lions" in the recent procession.
Police from the Central and Western districts were involved. They have established certain clubs in the Colony. Four of these, called "Hung Shing Clubs", promote the cultivation of the art of boxing, fencing, etc. They are frequented by all the low characters in the Colony as well as ordinary working coolies.
The first indication of trouble was on the 10th instant. Nothing further occurs until Saturday at 5 o'clock, when a fight took place at Praya West between a number of these two parties.
On Sunday, the coolies stopped fighting. On the 4th instant, when at 5:30, a fight took place in Staunton Street (or Hollywood Road, as some sources say) between Jung Koon men from the "Hung King Club", West Street, and others, over the question of a prize given. The Western District Police turned out, but no arrest was made. One injured person was sent to the Government Civil Hospital by the Police, and another was taken to the Tung Wah Hospital.
