1. What the Queen's College

is and what it was meant to be are

still very different things; and the results obtained by this expensive Establishment come seriously

short

of what might be expected. These results, as shown in the Oxford Local Examinations and in

competition for

the Government Scholarship and other prizes, are not higher than

of other far less pretentious institutions in the Colony such as the Diocesan School, St Joseph's College or the Britannia English School; and it may be doubted whether the success in teaching English comes up to that of the earlier Schools of the Colony, at St. Paul's College, the Anglo-Chinese College, and the Central School under Dr Stewart.

to come be in great part an Elementary English School, though doubtless its ultimate aim should be ...
