8. The Chinese do not take alcohol except on rare occasions. They are able to speak of Malays with contempt.
9. The habit of opium smoking is very much condemned by the great majority of Chinese. The use of alcohol is little known to them, so they are scarcely qualified to institute comparisons between the opium habit and the alcohol habit. They see the latter only amongst Europeans and regard it with tolerant feelings, mixed with contempt.
