Many Chinese consume opium.
It is one of the Asiatic races.
Of the Chinese, many adult males are consumers.
Few women are consumers; most of them are prostitutes;
Married women very rarely consume opium; and if they do so, it is usually in imitation of their husbands and they have no children.
Most opium consumers are physically weak, for the nature of opium is that of a poison and is injurious to the vitality and to the marrow, causing degeneration in various respects.
Opium smoking can be deadly.
Those who have smoked opium for a long time become listless and procrastinating.
Their faces become sallow.
Their mental characters deteriorate and they become opium slaves.
If opium is taken in small quantities, no injury is caused.
