Might show the opium habit after a habit extending over several years, but their business cannot be said to have been neglected. Smokers can be compared to sucking babes. It is their will and their curses that guide them.

No alcoholic habit to any extent amongst Asiatics. Yes, most certainly. They regard opium as the lesser of the two evils. The opium sot is termed the opium fiend.

They do, but they very seldom do so. A fixed determination of purpose will do it, but on account of the frequency of opium smokers along with their paraphernalia, their polite and oily invitation to have a smoke, a would-be reformed smoker has a poor chance. There is a well-known saying amongst smokers that "It is easy to put off the habit but hard to remain so" (a reformed smoker).

Cannot say. Perhaps China cannot say. I do not know. Possible. It remains to be seen.

No Europeans have any social intercourse with the smoking Asiatics to speak of, and the way to prepare the whiff or "dove" necessitating the occasional blowing of the pipe of the accumulated water both from the burning of the last smoke and the mouth of the last smoker, which means dirty practices, would prevent him from opium smoking.

Opium smoking is but a dirty habit to people.
