I beg to inform you that toward the close of the last China war 1860, 61. I purchased Corps, at the suggestions of Major d. C. Rowland R. A. Ordnance and Military Store Keeper at Hong Kong, and served under that Gentleman as Storeman and afterwards as Foreman of Magazines. In consequence of a reduction of the establishment being ordered by the Home authorities, I was reverted to Storeman and finally left the department.

The other Officers in connection with the department whilst I served in it, were Messrs W. Silva (Paymaster), George Pirkis and Brauscome (Ordnance Clerks), William Hing (Issuer of Stores) and Messrs Dalgarno, Carter, Smith, and ... Martin (Shrema -Kary Clerks).

After leaving the Ordnance and Military Store department, I was engaged as Government Emigration Clerk under D. G. Austin H.M.'s Special Agent for the promoting of Chinese Emigration to the West Indies (afterwards Colonial Secretary at Hong Kong). The Staff of European Clerks, Interpreters, and Agents were Mr. Theophilus Sampson of the Leeward Agency, and myself, Mr. Rubery, and Mr. Maxwell at Hong Kong, also Captain Godeffroy who had charge of the vessel purchased by Mr. J. G. Austin and used as a Receiving depot for Emigrants.
