CONTRIBUTION.

Sir,

No. 76.

20.72

Treasury to War Office.

Treasury Chambers,

16th July, 1892. The Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury have had under consideration the proposal affecting the Military Contribution payable by the Colony of Hong Kong, which was submitted in Mr. De la Bère's letter* of the 24th February last, and they direct me to state, for the information of Mr. Secretary Stanhope, that they will consent to the Military Contribution from that Colony remaining at £40,000 per annum up to the 31st December, 1893, but that they are not prepared for an extension of the period beyond the date originally recommended by Sir A. Haliburton's Committee; and in accordance with the suggestion of that Committee, they will ask that, at the commencement of 1893, the contribution may be reconsidered with a view to its readjustment in 1894.
