instant, and seeing that if he had not been detained for recruiting purposes, he would have arrived in the Colony by the 25th instant, and be receiving full pay, there would appear to be no alternative but to grant his request.

The position is not a satisfactory one, but it is due to the Colonial Government not having allowed proper time for the recruitment, and to the fact that the Captain Superintendent of Police requested that no men should be engaged from Scotland, as pointed out in our letter of the 9th instant.
