The Salary to be paid to the person engaged shall be at the rate of Four hundred and eighty dollars ($480) per annum rising by annual increments of Twenty-four dollars ($24) to six hundred dollars ($600) per annum - shall also be provided with furnished quarters at the Government Civil Hospital for unmarried men including rations, fuel, light, medical attendance, and medicines. Half salary will commence from date of embarkation. Full salary from the date of arrival in Hong Kong.

The person engaged shall on arrival in Hong Kong reside where ordered and faithfully and diligently employ the whole of his time in the service of the Government as Junior Wardmaster at the Government Civil Hospital and should necessity arise shall perform similar duties on board the Epidemic Hulk "Kagura" or in any similar capacity that the Government or any officer duly authorised in that behalf shall require and he shall in all things be subservient to and obey the orders and directions of the Government and shall not directly or indirectly engage or be concerned in any other service or any business whatsoever or receive commissions or profits of any kind and he shall use his utmost exertions to promote the interests of the Government.

In the event of the Government becoming desirous of determining the engagement of the person engaged at any time during the currency of the same it shall be at liberty to do so on giving him Three months' notice (signed by any duly authorised Officer) determinable at any period of the year or on the Government paying him Three months' Salary and providing him with a free passage Second Class by steamer to England including Railway fare to place of abode and if by reason of ill-health not caused by his own impropriety of conduct he shall under the Certificate of a Medical Officer appointed for that purpose by the Government be discharged from or compelled to give up his engagement with the Government and provided he shall in any of the events stated in this Article be desirous of returning to England the Government shall within one calendar month after the expiration or sooner determination of the term of service provide him with such a free passage to England but if he shall resign his appointment from any other cause he shall refund to the Government or to the Crown Agents for the Colonies the amount paid for his passage to the Colony and shall have no claim to a return passage.

If the person engaged shall at any time neglect or refuse from any cause (other than illness not caused by his own impropriety of conduct) to become unable to perform or comply with all or any of the Articles of this Agreement or all or any of the duties required of him or all or any of the orders or directions of the Government or its representatives or shall correspond verbally or otherwise, directly or indirectly, regarding the affairs of the Government with any person not in the employment of the Government or shall publish directly or indirectly any document or information of any kind whatever affecting the Government or shall in any manner misconduct himself it shall be competent for the Government to declare his employment at an end and he shall be forthwith dismissed by the Government and all rights, benefits, and advantages reserved to him by this Agreement shall cease and he shall be liable to be called upon to repay the amount paid for his passage to the Colony.
