full fare or $1917.50 out of his own pocket both on the voyage out and on the home voyage to England for his wife and family when going on leave, but there are numerous precedents for such free passages being granted. In fact, such free passages are always granted, and I presume that the usual course may be followed in this case.
Sergeant Baker, however, has five children, two of whom are of age for full fare. If, therefore, the limitation of the number of the family to four be applied to passages to England, as it is applied to passages out, he would have to defray one full fare.
Sergeant Baker has 20 years' service and this is the first time that he has taken leave. He is a very deserving officer and I recommend that, in the circumstances, I be authorised to take five passages for his family instead of four.
