discharge of his duties, and who is stated by the head of his Department to have rendered himself unfit for his duty by chronic alcoholism, to retire on pension.

I am further directed to request you to inform Mr Myers that I consider it necessary to take steps with a view to his suspension on the following charges which you should communicate to him in writing, viz.:

# "1. That on the 8th instant you allowed a patient to escape from the premises.

3. "That you have, as reported by the head of your department, rendered yourself unfit for duty by chronic alcoholism.

"Myers should at the same time be required to state within 3 days in writing the grounds on which he relies to exculpate himself; and I am to request you to forward his statement, as soon as you receive it, to this office with any observations that you may see fit to make on it. If he fail to furnish the statement within three days, I am to request you to report the fact to me accordingly.

2. That on the 9th instant while on duty in the European lunatic Asylum you allowed a certain person to have access to a female patient who was suffering from puerperal mania.
