with it a right to quarters - valued at $70 a month. I do not remember giving him any promise as that which he mentions, and I do not think it possible that he is correct in his recollection. At the time of which he speaks, it had been settled for various reasons, one of them a legal reason, that his appointment as Superintendent of the Water Police could not be continued, and as a matter of fact, it was almost immediately afterwards cancelled. But the point is not important, for his present emoluments considerably exceed those which he enjoyed as Assistant Harbour Master and Superintendent of the Water Police.
