On the average, I am already drawing not very far short of double the salary which he came to Hongkong only some four years ago. He was appointed Assistant Harbour Master with a salary of $2,640 per annum on 14th November 1889, his salary raised from September 1891 to $3,000, and he accepted the acting appointment of second Police Magistrate on the distinct understanding that he would be allowed to draw only the half pay of that office in addition to the half pay of his own appointment, or $4,092 in all. I subsequently, though not without some hesitation, permitted him to draw $1,500 from the pay of the second Magistrate in addition to the whole of his own pay, or $4,500 per annum in all.

If his present application in respect of emoluments were granted, he would draw a larger salary!
