decond Magistrate besides that. appointment is of his own an economical as well as a convenient one, and as on it's termination it would probably be necessary to appoint a separate second Magistrate, Mr. Wodehouse being hardly equal to the work of both Magistrates, I shall be glad if with a view to its continuance Commander Hastings be allowed to remain in Hongkong, though of course I should not wish to stand in his way in the event of its being contemplated to give him substantial promotion elsewhere:
3 I regret that I am unable to endorse his application for an addition to the emoluments which he is at present receiving. He is a capable and energetic officer, and has given satisfaction in the discharge of his duties; but the two offices which he is filling do not between them afford more than a fair day's work
