Captain Hastings retired from the Royal Navy with the rank of Commander November 1881. In September of that year he was appointed Inspector of Immigrants in Jamaica with salary of £200 Jr. a and traveling allowance £200 pa. In April 1889, his post in Jamaica having been abolished, he was appointed to be Chief of Police in St Lucia on £250 pa with allowance £100 and traveling allowance.

In the autumn of that year he was offered and accepted the post of Assistant Harbour Master in Hong Kong on a salary of $2640. He is now drawing $4500.

I made the preceding inquiry in order to see what he was likely to be in case of abolition; I think it off conclusively that he has not sought the position allege mission of service. I could not find any arm to the effect that if an opportunity arose he would be offered dublat employment.
