I attach, at a meeting of the Legislative Council held on that date, an expenditure not exceeding $96,000 for Gaol extension was unanimously agreed to. This amount will suffice to meet the cost, including the requisition of the necessary land, of providing detailed in Your Lordship's despatch No.53 of 24th March last. It also includes all the accommodation sum of $2,500 for the purposes, already reported to Your Lordship, of a juvenile reformatory.

The delay in taking the vote has been caused by my compliance with the not unreasonable request of the Unofficial Members that before it was introduced, the cost of acquiring the necessary land, and the amount of the lowest procurable and satisfactory tender for the execution of the work, should be definitely ascertained.
