$1200 per annum with free quarters. The quarters were not provided and an allowance of $360 per annum was given me in lieu thereof. This amount of $360 in lieu of quarters was placed to salary as house rent.

I respectfully call your Lordship's attention to the successive Annual Reports and volumes which have been published by the Director of this department, from which the portion of the work carried out by myself may be judged. 4. As a consequence of the additions to the staff of this department ordered in 1890, more important work has been allotted to myself and I beg respectfully to draw your Lordship's attention to the Volume of Observations and Researches for 1892, p. 6, para. 19 of the departmental report, - in which the Director shows how the work is distributed - and also to the "Report on the Typhoons of 1892."
5. Increased responsibility with regard to the work has been placed upon me and I respectfully submit that my salary is, at present, not commensurate with the duties I am called upon to perform and I therefore ask that my salary may be increased by fifty dollars ($50) per month.
