Government to his total service under the Crown will, on retirement, amount to 31 years and 7 months, and his total service under the Hongkong Government, to 16 years 6 months and 7 months 19 days, i.e., 16 years 6 months and 7 months 19 days. The share of 5 years by Hongkong is 2 years, 7 months 15 days.

(A) and (B) is 18 years 6 months and 19 days or say 18½ years, which is the period in respect of which pension is payable to him by the Hongkong Government.

The average of the emoluments of his five appointments during the three years ending with October 1878, when he left the Hongkong Service, was $6,000 per annum. This average is arrived at as follows:-

During the whole of the three years the pay of his fixed appointment as Registrar General was $3,840, and as Treasurer $960, and an allowance of $1,200 a year payable from the Special Fund was attached to his office of Registrar General on account of services in connection with suppression of illegal gaming houses.

The pension payable by Hongkong amounts therefore to $1,850 per annum, being 18½/30ths of the above mentioned average sum of $6,000.

This is equivalent to £385.8.4 at the rate to which he is entitled.
