pressed Mr. May to accept the appointment, and it was after these instances that he was able to act. Soon after, I informed the Colonial Secretary confidentially, for my own considerations, that three out of his four principal subordinates were either wholly incompetent to do their work or were not doing a fair day's work. The result of these representations was that the three Officers in question were compulsorily retired at the end of the year.

I also succeeded in getting in arrears of revenues. Under the supervision exercised in certain directions, I was required to stop the system of misappropriations that had been going on for years.

I acted as Treasurer for four critical months and drew half salary. In view of these considerations, I request that I be absolved from pecuniary responsibility for the amount that was misappropriated during the time that I was acting.

I worked hard and with considerable diligence.
