As the time came he will act as Barrack sergeant. The pay of a sergeant is $7.20 per annum.

It is proposed to increase the allowance of the European Drill Sergeant from $3 to ... a month, requiring more work from him at the same time, viz. the drilling of the Water Police and the supervision generally of all drilling at the Central Station. These duties can be efficiently performed by a member of the Force who, as stated above, has been in the Army.

I propose to apply to the Military Authorities for the loan of a commissioned officer to put the men through the annual Musketry course, which lasts ... weeks on average, and propose that the instructor should be paid at the rate of $25 a month.

If the above recommendations are approved, provision will be made on the Estimates and an economy of $750 a year will be effected (7840-490, i.e. the extra remuneration for Drill and Musketry instructors).

I have, etc.,

H. A. May, Act. Capt. Supt. of Police.

To: G. F. Mr. O'Brien, Colonial Secretary.
