2. on the 14th instant. I have received applications for the vacancy from the Assistant Harbour Master, Commander Hastings, from Mr Lethbridge, the Superintendent of the Victoria Gaol, from Major Selfe, R.A., and from Mr. F. May
3. Of these applicants I have no hesitation in recommending Mr May, one possessing the strongest claim and at the same time the best qualified candidate for the appointment, and I have much pleasure submitting his name for Your Lordship's approval.
