HONGKONG, JANUARY 19TH, 1893,

THE urgent necessity for an alternative telegraph cable between this and the Straits is shown by the present interruption of the line between Saigon and Singapore, during which messages to and from almost all parts of the world have to be forwarded via Siberia. Fortunately the break in the cable is close to Singapore and restoration may be expected soon. Were it further north, with bad weather prevailing to prevent the Company's repairing ship from working, there is no telling how long the Colony would have to be cut off from communication by the southern route: event of political complications or war this would be a dangerous state of affairs. It is therefore to be hoped that the Government will soon be in a position to render the Eastern Extension Company the facilities for which they have applied in order to enable them to carry out without delay the projected alternative connection between Hongkong and Singapore via Manila and Labuan.
