(Candidate having been in the service nearly ten years and will apply for leave shortly. It will therefore be absolutely necessary that analytical work should be required of the new applicant, as there will be no one in the service who can do the work of the laboratory should Mr Crow take leave of absence or fall sick.
I have therefore recommended that the new applicant should have a slight increase of pay, so that a competent man to do the work can be obtained. The salary proposed is provided for in this year's estimates, so no extra vote will be required this year. This appointment should be filled as expeditiously as possible.
