With reference to the Chinese examination I, in accordance with the suggestion contained in your letter of May 17, 1892, applied to Mr. Eagles of Diocesan College, but he was unable to give me any assistance in learning Cantonese as he was only qualified to teach in Mandarin. However I am now making further inquiries and hope to hear from some Missionary or other person who will be able to assist during the next six months.
Under these circumstances I would request that the time for passing the examination be extended or that it be left to the Governor to fix the time. The duties of Registrar will keep me at the office during the best part of the day, so that there is really very little time left to study the language.
Quite apart from my previous experience, I know that work often has the effect of making one feel tired at night. Trusting that this request will be granted I can only add that I will do my best as soon as possible.
Your obedient servant,
Alfred Winstanley
