Mr Ackroyd's appointment is satisfactory and as
Mr Wise has acted as Registrar on two occasions and once as Puisne Judge, I have no doubt but that he would
do well as a successor to Mr Ackroyd. He is a man of
good strong common sense, a quick worker, and very friendly with Clarke. His appointment would be popular in the Colony. Both himself and his wife are popular in the Colony. Mr Seth is not the man for the
place. He has no position in the Colony and never
can have. He could not manage the lawyers with whom
the Registrar has much to do.
I don't think the Office ought to be too hard on
Wise for not studying the Chinese as arranged because
he was taken off to obtain work, where he really had not
the same opportunity.
