Sir,

I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of

the 2nd instant with which you are so good as to enclose copy

of a communication received by the Marquess of Ripon from the

Governor of Hong Kong, in regard to the loss of the "BOKHARA",

together with a reprint of the articles which recently appeared

in the Hong Kong Telegraph* upon the subject.

I am requested by the Directors to beg you will express

their best thanks to the Marquess of Ripon for the papers sent,

and to say that they have written out to their Superintendent in

Hong Kong, desiring him to present a Watch and Chain+ or a

piece of plate, to the Mandarin of Makung, as a mark of their

appreciation of the kindness displayed towards the Shipwrecked

people.
