I am directed to inform you that on inspection of Public accounts ...

The Hon: R.H. Meade,

Sir,

3 DEC 92

I am directed by the Comptroller and

Auditor General to acknowledge the receipt of Mr.

Fairfield's letter of 26th ultimo enquiring whether

the Hong Kong Audit Vote for $10000 might not be

reduced to $8000 in future years.

In reply I am to inform you that the

question of reducing the Vote for Audit Expenditure

received careful consideration when the Estimates

for 1893, which were furnished to you in the letter

from this Department of 19th July last were framed.

As the Secretary of State is aware the

proportionate share of Home Audit expenditure on

behalf of the various Colonies is calculated on a

fixed principle in accordance with Article 6 of the Colonial Audit Regulations of 15th July, 1890; and in view of the uncertainty as to further depreciation of the dollar the Comptroller and Auditor General hesitates to reduce the Estimate for Hong Kong for

the ensuing year.

The Estimate of $5650 for local

charges in 1893 is believed to be accurate and will

probably be fully required. It includes provision

for a tour of inspection which Mr. Nicolle, the Local Auditor has been instructed to make to Shanghai and

the Coast Ports.
