2013 SEP 32,
I am directed by the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury to transmit to you, for the information
of the Marquis of Ripon copy of a letter from the War office of the 2nd instant, respecting the appointment of Major General A.H.A.Gordon as Captain Superintendent of
Police at Hong Kong, and to state with reference to the
recent agreement to include a Colony like Hong Kong amongst those to which the agreement of 1888 is to apply, that My Lords would point out to the secretary of State
:
that the employment of a Military Officer with Retired Pay
of £300 per annum in such a post as Superintendent of Polic
offers to the Colonial Government an opportunity of effect-
ing an economy, by reduction of salary, which would make it
easier for the Colony to meet its obligation towards this
Country in the matter of the Military contribution.
I am,
Sir,
Your obedient servant,
Rank Mowall
The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial office.
